Reflective Statement…

Overall I found this project frustrating. It was very exciting to be able to pick our own brand and business idea. However, after some confusion at the beginning of the unit about brand choices, some of us on the course got off to a shaky start.

It was difficult to select an idea for a brand extension, it seemed that any good ideas I came up with had already been put into practise! I also wanted to pick an area that I had particular interest in, to keep my interest levels up.

The unit handbook is a document that I usually refer back to throughout the unit if there is anything I am unsure about, but in this case, it gave very little help as many of the things stated on there had been amended in class and changed to mean something entirely different. Where it said ‘a business plan’ we were told to change to ‘a report’ etc.

As the unit went on, we seemed to realize different learning objectives one by one that had not been made clear at the beginning. For example, none of us had known that we were expected to create a sales forecast until 2 weeks before hand-in date, and then shown how to create one, 1 week before hand in. Small issues such as this seemed to change and shape the structure of the project as time went on. I feel, and I’m sure many others on the course will agree, that the goalposts moved significantly during the unit.

Making the advert was the most enjoyable and valuable part. I designed, organized, styled, shot and edited my very own short video; and I am happy with the results. I used experience gained at my work placement in January where I helped organize the edits of the CKOne advertising campaign, to edit and manage my advert. However, as this part of the project is not heavily weighted, I fear my enjoyment in this area was in vain.

Overall I did enjoy this project, but I am not confident about the mark I will receive due to the nature of what was expected of us as student. I feel that the unit we were briefed on was an entirely different unit to the one we are now expected to hand in.

‘Ghost’ by Alexander McQueen for Puma.

As the brand have never released any television commercials, there is little film material I can look to for inspiration. The above video was created for the McQueen for Puma range in 2005. The brand often draws inspiration from nature and the natural world so I hope to continue this theme with my television commercial. I like the way the ideas of space and time are used in the above video, through slow motion and interesting camera angles. I also like the way water is used, but frozen mid-air; to fill the empty space.
